The number of people abducted by pirates on ships last year was the highest ever recorded, according to a report released by the International Maritime Bureau . According to the organization, 1,181 sailors were captured last year, and eight were killed. In total, 53 ships were hijacked.
The IMB that is linked to the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), has also informed that there were 445 attacks on ships in 2010, an increase of 10% over the previous year.
The number of hostages from pirates has been rising in recent years - from 188 in 2006 to 1,050 in 2009 and 1,181 last year.
According to the IMB, kidnappings promoted by Somalian pirates were 92% last year, with 49 vessels and 1,016 sailors captured. Until December 31, 28 boats and 638 people remained hostage by pirates in Somalia.
